Norwegians have a word for their relationship with nature: Friluftsliv. The expression literally means “life in the open air”, and was coined in 1859 by the Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen, who included it in a poem entitled On the Heights. This painting is addressed to the playwright.
